Understanding Health and Wellbeing in Southeast Asia

The Challenge

A national dairy export council wanted to understand how attitudes towards health and wellness, identified as a strategic pillar for the industry, had evolved in six Southeast Asian markets post-Covid.

They wanted to examine conversations, awareness, and behaviors around health and wellness, and how they have become more mainstream and relevant to consumers. In sum, we needed to:

1.

Analyse the current
supply chain

2.

Benchmark against
industry role models

3.

Recommend a plan for
improving efficiency

The Process

In each country studied, we conducted:

  • Desk research on published information surrounding health and wellness in the region,
  • A retail audit and quantitative study in all markets, and
  • Face-to-face/online interviews with consumers and industry experts.

The Results

The information was used to further expand product development in Asia – not only by helping the client better understand each country’s consumption habits, but also by refining the type of products to produce for the different markets. The findings and Y&S’ recommended strategies were used by the clients to make systematic short- and long-term development plans.

Competitor Benchmarking in Asia-Pacific

The Challenge

The client wanted to ensure that its IT after-sales service offerings and infrastructure were designed and delivered at peak performance to maximize market share. In particular, they wanted to compare their warranty, upsell and cost-of-service against competing firms in Australia, China and Korea.

The Process

A variety of approaches were deployed to meet the client’s brief, including:

  • Interviews with authorised service centers and channels to estimate Annual Failure Rate for specific SKUs, and to better understand competitor support infrastructure,
  • Consumer surveys to estimate average length of time of support,
  • Business cost research to estimate per-repair job costs, and
  • Secondary research and mystery engagement to determine parameters of competitor support.

The Result

The client gained a comprehensive picture of how they stacked up against their competitors, and also received recommendations on best practices in after-sales service. They used this intelligence to set priorities for an annual support review and planning exercise.

Developing Policy-setting and Capacity-building Recommendations

The Challenge

The client is an inter-government regional economic forum in Asia-Pacific. The grouping wanted to see progress in the adoption of services to improve food systems and create food security. There was a need to understand the impact of the services environment on food supply chain players, as well as critical barriers and opportunities for services engaged in the food supply chain. It also wanted to look at how the Covid-19 pandemic had affected food security.

The Process

The study utilised both primary and secondary research. Primary research involved conducting interviews with food supply chain stakeholders such as farmers and also service providers in Indonesia and Mexico. The secondary research portion was desktop research on all related topics.

The Result

We identified opportunities for policy-making and capacity building in the horticultural sector. Three areas were highlighted:

  • To improve efficiencies in supply chains,
  • Upgrade transportation/logistical management and connectivity, and
  • Improve awareness, knowledge-building and technical know-how of farmers.

We also highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by the horticulture sector that were further put in the spotlight due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Gauging Brand Health and Customer Satisfaction

The Challenge

Our client is one of Singapore’s largest providers of early childhood and pre-school education. They were going through a rebranding exercise and wanted to improve their brand communication and product delivery. Specifically, they wanted to establish:

  • A baseline brand health for their main brand,
  • Identify areas for improvement in enrolment, and
  • Find areas for improvement in the in-school experience.

The Process

Y&S researchers designed and analysed data from online surveys, assessing the overall brand health and enrolment. Among many parameters, they looked at why parents chose the pre-schools, and compared their experience and satisfaction levels with other competitor brands.

The Result

Our findings and recommendations enabled our client to adjust their service and marketing strategies at different clusters, pinpoint areas of improvement in operational procedures and identify centers and locations where they lagged behind competitors.

Mapping Product Utilization in Asia Pacific

The Challenge

The client wanted to understand how end-users from six markets  – Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia and India – were utilizing maps. They wanted to find out why and how often maps were used, search terms used, the information users required as well as feedback about the user interface.

The Process

An ethnographic study was conducted to collect the information. Steps involved were:

  • Drawing up screening criteria for ideal respondents in each market,
  • Recruitment of the respondents, and
  • An expert ethnographer accompanying and observing respondents for eight hours a day, unobtrusively.

The Result

The client received a rich mine of data and recommendations to fine-tune their maps for each country, such as product feedback, user interface improvements and more. Y&S also conducted a follow-up study to evaluate how the updated maps were faring with users, too.

Printer Price Benchmarking

The Challenge

The client wanted to compare pricing of its home and office printing solutions with competitors across 11 countries. They needed vital information in three areas:

  • Printer prices across three different stores monthly (for retail printers) and quarterly (for commercial printers),
  • An analysis and comparison of the costs of printing consumables, and
  • Tracking of competitors’ prices, availability and promotions for shared customers and certain competitor SKUs.

The Process

In-country Y&S teams collected the prices both offline and online, while new offers and promotions by brands were tracked. Specifications of printers were updated along with pricing, to compare each SKU based on features. Finally, all of the data was maintained centrally, according to the client’s specifications.

The Result

The client became more aware of pricing and promotional policies pursued by their competitors in the various markets, and were able to respond accordingly with well-informed pricing decisions.
